An Unusual Spring

I think this year I missed spring

There must have been tulips

And daffodils

And a plethora of lilacs

There must have been warm winds

And rain

And even a plethora of dandelions

There must have been little kids

Shedding their winter wear

And going barefoot in the grass

Shedding their mittens

And searching for banana slugs and caterpillars

All I’ve seen are dry cattails

Even red-winged blackbirds alight elsewhere

Late heavy snows crushed just-rising Columbine

And tulip tree branches lie broken nearby

I’ve waited and watched but

Underneath the overpass

No owls take up nesting as before

I’ve become unsure of resurrection                                                            -- Spring, 2020
